Hugh Masekela Dies at 78

Legendary SA Trumpeter Hugh Masekela Confirmed Dead

Legendary South African trumpeter High Masekela has died at the age of 78, can confirm.

The composer and singer’s death comes a decade after a courageous battle with prostate cancer.

The music legend passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 23, 2018 in Johannesburg, South Africa, surrounded by his family.

Born in KwaGuqa Township, Witbank, South Africa, he started playing the trumpet at the age of fourteen (14).

He was a three-time Grammy Awards nominee; including a nomination for Best World Music Album with his 2012 album Jabulani.

He was also a recipient of many other music awards including the Ghana Music Awards 2007‘s African Music Legend Award. He was also featured by Zylofon Music songstress Becca on her “I Love You” single.
