Why Car Registration Is Important

When a car is manufactured, it gets entered in the records of the manufacturer or franchise that sells it, but the National Registry of Motor Vehicles doesn’t have a record of it.

In this sense, it is unlawful to have such a vehicle moving in society since it has the potential to be used for criminal activity and is difficult to track at the same time.

Additionally, there is no record of these occurrences, so it is difficult to report them to the police.

It is a requirement that every vehicle has a registration number in order to drive legally.

Documents Required for Car Registration In Ghana

Here are a few documents that you need in order to get your car registered so you become the owner legally.

It is imperative that you provide these documents to prove that you are legally allowed to operate a vehicle.

In the event of suspension or revocation of your license, you are not eligible to register or operate a vehicle.

  • Certificate of Title

Legally, only this document proves your ownership of a vehicle.

In this case, if you purchase a car without the required certificate from a private seller or dealer, the car still belongs to them since the certificate contains the seller’s name.

Also, whenever you buy a car that is already registered, you will need to transfer legal ownership of the vehicle from the seller or owner to you.

  • Proof of Insurance

Documents such as this serve as evidence that the car has been insured, and are usually provided by the insurance company with policy details and issue dates.

  • A Sales Contract

Upon purchasing a car, you receive this document as part of the paperwork.

In addition, they contribute to the proof of a transaction.

Contracts should clearly state what product was sold, in what quantity, and the price that was charged.

Also, it is equally crucial that you mention or specify how a contract can be terminated and how disputes will be resolved in the contract.

  • Bill of Sales

In addition to serving as proof of the transaction between you and the seller, this document serves as a record of the transaction as well.

This document provides information about the vehicle’s sale date, the seller, and the vehicle for the purpose of cross-referencing.

  • Customs Clearance Form

Here, the car is examined to be sure it has all its original documents, and the customs authority must verify that all charges and duties have been paid.

It is their responsibility to determine whether the car’s year matches that on the document.

If the vehicle belongs to someone else, you must present a valid identification to be able to obtain the required documentation.

Car Registration In Ghana: How To Register

Once you have all the documents listed above, you will be able to register your car at any DVLA office.

To register your vehicle with the DVLA, you will need to follow the following procedure.

Vehicles with customs documents should be delivered to the customs officials at DVLA for inspection and release for registration stamp.

Submit release files to officials at the DVLA for inspection, review, and documentation.

A fee is charged for each vehicle based on the cubic capacity/tonnage.

Fill out Form A and Vehicle Registration Certificate (VRC). Place photographs and signs at appropriate places.

Normally, Form A is used when the registration is done by the owner, while Form C is used when the ownership is transferred.

Fill out forms and return them to the DVLA for processing.

An assigned registration number is issued and the license plate is given to its owner.

There will also be an added requirement for commercial vehicles to have retro-reflective tapes, and without seatbelts, vehicles cannot be registered.

Commercial vehicles pay a lower road worthy because their road worthy expires in six months and private cars expire in a year.
